Enterprises, large and small, are experiencing rapid growth for data and video applications. With this growth comes the mandate to contain wide area bandwidth costs. The challenge is particularly acute for businesses with many remote sites.
WAN compression is becoming a critical tool in managing cost for these businesses. The economics are compelling. Depending upon the mix of applications, bandwidth can expand on average by 2-3 times. In some cases, bandwidth can expand by up to 10 times. The result is immediate, measurable savings. Profitability improves as WAN operating costs are reduced. Investments in more bandwidth can be delayed. Productivity and customer response can also improve as applications run more quickly over existing WAN links.

SELECTIVE COMPRESSION OPTIMIZES BUSINESS APPLICATION PERFORMANCE
To optimize both WAN bandwidth and application performance, compression needs to be applied intelligently. This means knowing which applications to compress. The bandwidth Compression Appliance allows Web traffic to be cached while large email file transfers are compressed.
SUPERIOR WAN COST SAVINGS
The Bandwidth Compression Appliance integrates infima world best compression technologies to deliver cost savings that are unsurpassed in the industry. Bandwidth can be expanded by as much as 10X.
In “real world” testing—based on industrystandard Canterbury, Large, Bio-medical and Calgary Corpus files— the Bandwidth Compression Appliance was found to improve WAN capacity by nearly 300%. This is a 70% improvement over the closest competing product. While Bandwidth demands can be reduced by as much as 80%—more in some cases. These cost savings not only improve the near term profitability of the business, they also delay investments in more bandwidth as application traffic grows.
ENHANCED PRODUCTIVITY AND CUSTOMER RESPONSIVENESS
The bandwidth expansion enabled by compression also accelerates application file transfers. For example, Bandwidth Compression Appliance performance testing has shown that an uncompressed 11 megabyte binary file takes 62 seconds to transfer over a T1 link. When compressed by the Bandwidth Compression Appliance, transfer time is reduced to 34 seconds. This 50% improvement in transfer speed means employees are more productive and customers are better served.

increase network capacity
Infima's compression technologies deliver an easy way to quickly increase network capacity over the same physical links, improving application performance and user response times. Infima's unique plug-in architecture enables continuous improvement in compression gains—world best compression ratio's.
Application-Intelligent Symmetric Compression
Compression works between two Infima's components—symmetrically—to engage specialized, low-latency compression technologies. Using patent pending traffic compression technologies —including multiple modules, fragment caching, header compression and bundling—our Layer application intelligence helps identify different application types and apply the optimal compression techniques to each.
Application-Specific Selective Compression
Infima's Application Library chooses a different compression approach for packet payload—instead of for packet headers—applying "two pass" compression to less latency-sensitive applications.
When it makes sense, Infima's application intelligence opts not to compress, saving resources and getting better overall compression results. Compression results vary, depending on application mix.
Plug-In Architecture
Infima's plug-in architecture enables the application to add new, application-specific compression sub-modules over time. We continue to update our compression technologies —releasing a brand new patent pending technology which achieves world best ratio's for all data types and improving effectiveness by about 40 percent. As plug-ins, new classifications can be easily downloaded as they become available—without waiting for a major software release.
Minimize Latency: MTU Management, Packing and Rate Control
To minimize latency and further accelerate traffic, Infima's MTU (maximum transmission unit) management automatically adjusts MTU size to eliminate excess delays from link serialization delay or increase MTU to eliminate overhead from headers and acknowledgements.
Selectively bundling or concatenating packets, Infima's application library evaluates packet and MTU size as well as network timing to determine if, and when, combining multiple compressed packets into a single larger packet makes sense. Packing reduces overhead and improves compression gains.
Where Infima's Appliances Sit — A Two-Sided Solution
Infima appliances are deployed on the lower layer of the application protocol side. Since Appliances must be positioned so that they see all inbound and outbound traffic of the application.
Infima compression requires two appliances, one deployed at each end of a connection (Client/Server). Each appliance compresses its outbound traffic, and each unit at the receiving end decompresses inbound traffic, restoring traffic to its original state. The passageways for
compressed traffic between compression partners are known as tunnels.

| Infima Lossless JPEG2000 Compression Library |
The technology that lies behind Infima Jpeg compression allows Infima to re-compress JPEG2000 files by an average of nearly 10% without causing any addition loss in image quality (Bit to Bit reproduction). Infima Jpeg2000 compression SDK introduces a new method for preprocessing JPEG images before they are compressed.
Infima JPEG2000 compression library introduces a new compression modeling concept which allows us to re-compress JPEG2000 files without causing any addition loss in image quality.
JPEG-2000:
The codec is based on wavelet/subband coding techniques. It handles both lossy and lossless compression using the same transform-based framework, and borrows heavily on ideas from the embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) scheme. In order to facilitate both lossy and lossless coding in an efficient manner, reversible integer-to-integer and nonreversible real-toreal transforms are employed. To code transform data, the codec makes use of bit-plane coding techniques.
Key Features:
- Transforms all component layers back to the RAW frequency domain.
- Split the image into horizontal slices coded independently, separated by restart codes.
- Adjust Prediction coefficients to minimize average round-off errors.
- Scan each block starting with first coefficient in zigzag order, interleaving the 3 color components in order to scan the whole image left to right starting at the top.
- Code the coefficients.
